Member Spotlight: Oregon Convention Center
Updated: Nov 29, 2018
So many great updates happening at the OCC!
The Oregon Convention Center (OCC), designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca (ZGF) Architects, originally opened in 1990 and is characterized by its two distinctive spires. The structure achieved LEED Platinum status in 2014, 1 of only 2 convention centers to have this designation. Rooftop solar panels generating 25% of the facility’s energy is just one of many reasons why they were able to be recognized as LEED Platinum. Building on this accomplishment, the OCC is currently undergoing a dramatic period of renewal that will bring tremendous benefit to Lloyd, Portland and our region as a whole.
The Oregon Convention Center Hotel (Hyatt Regency Portland) development is well underway and is expected to be completed in early 2020, have a birds eye view of the progress here. The 600 room hotel will be LEED certified, support 950 permanent hotel and hospitality jobs and is estimated to facilitate the region’s convention business growing by 5-10 new conventions annually once opened. In tandem with this hotel project is a $35 million renovation of the OCC, which is scheduled for completion in October 2019. A major emphasis of this redevelopment is to make the OCC more welcoming to visitors by giving the interior a significant facelift with design features that draw inspiration from the natural environment of the Northwest. The exterior space will also be part of this project scope, especially the plaza area which will be opened up to be more conducive to a variety of programming such as receptions and concerts. More details here.
Despite all of the improvements underway, OCC is open and their team is diligent about keeping noise and dust to a minimum. Be sure to stop by and check out the progress!
