Lights Out, Oregon!
Peak fall migration is here! From September 19-October 19, you can help ensure the safety of our nighttime migrants by participating in Lights Out, Oregon!
Over the course of peak fall migration, millions of birds will move over Oregon under the cover of darkness to reach their wintering grounds. By turning off or dimming your lights from dusk until dawn, we can work together to reduce the collective light pollution that accumulates in the sky and drowns out the stars that help them find their way.
Not only does this help birds who are migrating at night– it also benefits mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and plants, and even humans (light pollution impacts sleep health and glare is not safe for cyclists, pedestrians or drivers!). Additionally, it promotes sustainability, saves energy and money, reduces carbon emissions and preserves our view of the night sky. You can also pledge to reduce your light pollution impact.
Building Participation in Lights Out means that from 11 PM to dawn:
Turn off rooftop lighting
Turn off or dim exterior architectural lighting
Turn off or dim lobby/atrium lighting
Turn off interior lights in unoccupied spaces (or have interior lighting on motion sensors)
Ask tenants to close blinds or drapes
Residents can help by turning off non-essential porch, balcony, and yard lighting and drawing curtains and blinds during migration season.
